Vortrag von Firdaus Mbogo: Artivism and the Quest for Freedom: Exploring the Role of Contemporary Tanzanian Art in Democracy

Contemporary Tanzanian art serves as a powerful medium for activism, reflecting the country’s reputation as one of the most peaceful nations in Africa. This discussion delves into the intersection of art and democracy in Tanzania, focusing on the concept of artivism (art activism) and its implications for freedom of expression among Tanzanian artists.

Despite Tanzania’s peaceful reputation, questions arise regarding the extent to which artistic expression is truly free within its democratic framework. Through an exploration of the role of artivism, we will examine how Tanzanian artists navigate societal and political constraints to voice dissent, challenge norms, and advocate for change. Drawing on examples from contemporary Tanzanian art, the discussion will analyse how artists engage with pressing social, political, and environmental issues, using their creativity as a tool for social critique and advocacy.

Furthermore, this discussion will investigate the influence of social media on the freedom of expression among Tanzanian artists. In an era marked by digital connectivity, social media platforms have become vital spaces for artists to disseminate their work, connect with audiences, and amplify their voices. However, the challenges and risks associated with online activism, including censorship, surveillance, and backlash from authorities are also to be considered.

By examining the dynamic relationship between art, activism, and democracy in Tanzania, this discussion will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities of artistic expression in a peaceful yet politically nuanced context. It underscores the importance of supporting and safeguarding freedom of expression for Tanzanian artists, recognizing their invaluable contributions to democratic discourse and social change.
