METHODS OF CURATING
The workshop “Speculative Memories: Curating the Digital Archive” by Madhusree Dutta (artistic director Academy of the Arts of the World) and Therese Schuleit (artist, Cologne) examines digital archiving as an artistic and curatorial practice. Taking the presentation of two projects – “Project Cinema City” (2008-2012) and “found:erased:palimpsest” (2018) – as a starting point we’ll try different techniques of constructing memories on the base of speculative timelines and brainstorm about digital infrastructures and interfaces to open up collective archival processes.
The workshop will be held partly in English, partly in German. It takes place in the context of “Methods of Curating – Über Strategien, Ästhetiken und Effekte kuratorischer Handlungsweisen” (Nada Schroer, Institut für Kunst & Kunstheorie, Universität zu Köln).
Madhusree Dutta is an Indian filmmaker, author, pedagogue and curator. She is a founding member of the Academy of the Arts of the World and its Artistic Director since March 2018. In 1990 Dutta cofounded the interdisciplinary cultural center Majlis in Mumbai, which among other activities advocates for women’s rights in India. Though visual culture is the key to her works, interdisciplinary initiatives and multi-linguality in representations frame her engagements. Among other, she curated Project Cinema City, an inter-disciplinary project on archiving a city’s minor histories and PAD.MA – the open access digital archive of unedited videos.
Therese Schuleit is an artist and independent curator based in Cologne. Her works explore the perception, material, acoustic description of spaces and its inhabitants. Mixed media installations, fringing contrasts, subversive nonsense and critical materials. Member of AIC – Art Initiatives Köln.
