Gastvortrag von Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide: A Lasting Truth Is Change

  • Diese Veranstaltung hat bereits stattgefunden.

More than ever, institutions are being called upon to transform so that they reflect a democratic and just way of life. This demand has been illuminated by the global pandemic that highlighted inequities across class, gender, race, religion, and ability making biases harder to deny. We need art institutions to be leaders in change as they are where imagination is elaborated or as Angela Davis puts it: “It’s art that can make us feel what we don’t necessarily understand.” Art allows us to experiment with what we do not yet know how to imagine.
The exhibition „A Lasting Truth Is Change“ at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, responds to this call for system change. Departing from the Van Abbemuseum’s collection, the exhibition centers the question: How can heritage institutions get in line with called-for transformation? To start, they must involve themselves in harm reduction and apply art’s capacity to radically imagine more just ways of living well together. The exhibition works towards this by including works from the collection that represent art movements, exhibition histories, and archives to address “change”—a rather tenuous premise given museums put a lot of resources and effort into keeping things the same: be that through archiving practices, collection maintenance, or the building of expertise through select staff.

Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide is exhibitions curator at the Van Abbemuseum. Previously she was deputy director at Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, where she began as an intern in 2008. Her interests lie in diverse, intersecting perspectives and modes that decentre the oppressor in practices of freedom and liberation, and influence art institutional practices. She is co-editor of several books including „Unlearning Exercises: Art Organisations as Sites for Unlearning“ (Casco Art Institute, Valiz, 2018); „Laure Prouvost, This Means Love“ (Lisson Gallery, Van Abbemuseum, 2021). She has been a tutor at the Dutch Art Institute, Roaming Academy (Southern Wave, 2016 and All About My Mother, 2019), thesis advisor in the Fine Arts department at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam (2016–2019) and is a board member at Neverneverland, Amsterdam and at Kunstituut Melly, Rotterdam.
